10 Steps in Finding the Best Title for Your Book

Why do you need a good title for your book? The title plays a big part in creating a favorable first impression for your book. If you have a catchy title, you will have a better chance of attracting more readers and generating more sales for your book.
Coming up with a good book title can be a struggle for many authors. One day is just not enough! Here is a fact, though: traditional publishers have the right to change your title. But if you put your best effort forward, they might just stick with it. Here are some simple steps on how you can come up with the best book title:
1. The very first thing you have to take into consideration is the genre of your book. If you have a serious book, then the title should also be serious. It should be clear and precise on what the book is about. The important thing here is to immediately convey to the reader what your book is about.
2. The next thing you should do is go to a bookstore website like Amazon or Barnes and Noble. Look for books with the same genre as yours and write down their titles. Make notes on what you like and what you don't like about the titles and set them aside for future reference.
3. You can also get ideas for your title from the characters in your book. Think about the main characters in your story and write down the words that best describe them. Think also about the settings and locations of your story, then list down in words the impressions that you want your readers to have.
4. Friends and family can also be great sources of help. Have them read your book and request that they come up with titles and write them down on a piece of paper. Ask your friends to sit down with you and help you critique the titles you and your friends came up with.
5. Think of any and all words that describe your book and write down all of them. It can be any word, no rules and restrictions; just jot down everything.
6. Check your list and see if there are any words that can stand up as a single-word title. Play with it by adding other words. Constantly check your thesaurus for other terms or alternative words. Try to come up with 15 titles doing this.
7. Rest for 24 hours. By doing this, you're giving your brain time to rest and to maybe come up with fresh ideas while resting. Go back to your list and add some of your new ideas.
8. You will need the help of your friends and family again: this time, to narrow down the list of titles you have written down.
9. Finally, you will have to make a decision. After narrowing down the list with the help of others, it is still your decision. Before choosing, rest and give it a day or two before deciding.
10. Once you've picked your title, savor it and enjoy the moment! Fall in love with the title you have chosen and be convinced that it's the best. After all, you wrote the book, so have faith that you know what title will be best for it.
