Marathon Training Program

You can find books about marathon training and plenty of websites online that provide training programs. Regardless of your level of experience, there are programs that are designed for your ability levels.
Before you begin training, beginners should take a cautious approach and start small. Doing too much too soon is placing more demands on your body that it's capable of handling. Running a marathon should not be taken lightly; finishing one requires dedication and a lot of training. In fact, ideally one should be a runner for at least a year in order to prepare the mind and body for marathon training.
Regardless of where you get a marathon training program, be sure that it's very structured and detailed. It should break down into phases: build-up, taper off, and recovery once the race has been completed. A program should always be followed exactly as it's laid out; each phase plays an important role in getting the best results. Deviating from it in anyway or having a lack of focus during any part of the training could have an impact on the results you get.
The build up phase is fairly self-explanatory; it involves building up stamina at a steady pace. Dramatic increases in distance should be avoided; the distance you run early on in your training should be consistent for awhile. A 10% increase is a good number to shoot for.
Dramatic increase of distance will not give the body ample time to adjust, which could increase the risk of injury. Having a structured program takes the guesswork out of your training and prevents you from doing too much on a given day. You could run short distances during weekdays, and one long run on the weekends.
The shorter distance running throughout the week will give the body a break from the long-distance running.
The next phase of the marathon-training program is the taper period. The month before the race is when your training should be tapering off. It's designed to help the body recover just a little bit so it's not too tired for the race. The rule of thumb is to cut back your mileage by 25% during this time. During the final week, you should be running only a few short distances. You will feel the results of the tapering off during the day of the race when you are flexible, well-rested, and in peak condition.
Once the marathon is over, then the recovery phase begins. This period includes rest so your body can recuperate from all the training and the competition. The success of any marathon training program is measured can ultimately be measured by the level of commitment made by the participant.

Symptoms of TMJ

Do you worry you may have TMJ? The temporomandibular joint is the one located at the side of your head, right at the location where the jaw connects to the structure of the head. You can place your finger on this location and move your mouth up and down to feel the joint working. It is possible to develop a condition in which the muscle or the joint itself becomes inflamed or otherwise damaged. If you feel that you may have this condition, talk to a dental care provider about it right away.
What Happens?
TMJ sufferers often complain of pain or problems with the way these joints work (remember, you have two, one on each side of your head.) In a healthy structure, they work without any pain, and you likely do not think about it or feel it. They help you to talk and to eat. They can even help you to yawn. When dysfunction occurs, though, both the muscle and the joint could be at risk. You should seek out a doctor if any of the following conditions and symptoms apply to your situation:
- You have pain that runs through the face. This may occur in the face, jaw or the neck region. The pain can be fleeting or lasting. In some cases, it can be sudden and sharp.
- Do you have stiff muscles in this area? Numerous small muscles control how this structure works. If they are damaged or overworked, they can stiffen up like any other muscle in your body.
- Do you have locked jaw? In some cases, it becomes difficult to move the joint at all or it may even lock into place. Do not try to force it to change or move, but do contact a doctor about it right away.
- When you use your jaw, do you hear clicking or a popping sound? This is often painful or it can become painful if you continue to allow it to happen. The socket and ball design of this structure can make this happen.
- Do you have some type of change in the way your upper and lower teeth align? In some cases, the way they fit or come together does not feel normal or right. When this happens, it could be an indication of a problem.
In some cases, TMJ pain and discomfort is fleeting. It can go away on its own without any treatment. In other cases, you can allow the structure to heal on its own by just reducing the amount of use to the joint. In some cases, doctors can offer medications for pains or, in rare situations, surgery to treat the underlying problem.
If you are experiencing pain in your face or jaw, speak to a doctor about the possibility of having cincinnati tmj. Visit   http://www.drmunowitz.com for more information about this condition.

Try sitting in a quiet, dark room while doing some deep breathing exercises. This is an extremely effective way of reducing stress and clearing your mind.
Plan for Your Recovery
Finally, it is important to plan well for your recovery from plastic surgery. You will want to talk to your doctor about the expected recovery time in order to determine precisely how long you will need. After you have done this, you will need to be sure to clear your schedule in the days after your procedure so that you are not trying to overextend yourself during these pivotal days or weeks. Make sure that you have plenty of time to take off of work, and make sure that your home is well stocked with all of the essentials. This will reduce the likelihood of your having to leave the house while you are recovering.
Plastic surgery is a big commitment. Therefore, you want to make sure that you are well prepared long before the actual procedure. By making sure that your mind and body are healthy and by planning for your recovery, you can ensure that your experience is a positive one.

The Benefits of Breast Augmentation

Are you considering having a breast augmentation? If so, then there are a few things that you should be made aware of. Most notably, it is important for you to be familiar with the many benefits that accompany this procedure. Among these are increased size and improved shape of the breasts as well as an improved body image.
Increased Size
The most obvious benefit of breast augmentation is that it serves to increase the size of the breasts. For many women, small breasts are viewed as a problem. Women can be self-conscious about the size of their breasts, and this can lead to negative consequences in both their personal and professional lives. This procedure does away with these problems by ensuring that the breasts are large enough for the individual woman to feel comfortable and confident.
Improved Shape
Aside from simply increasing the size of the breasts, a breast augmentation can help to improve the shape of them as well. Many women are unhappy that their breasts are unequal in size or are asymmetrical in shape. In other cases, they might be unhappy that their breasts are sagging or are not as perky as they once were. Undergoing the procedure can alleviate all of these problems. This is because, during the course of the procedure, implants are inserted into the breasts, and they can then be adjusted so that the breasts are perky and shapely. This allows the woman to choose the shape that she desires for her breasts.
Improved Self Image
Finally, and most importantly, a breast augmentation can do wonders for a woman's self image. In many cases, when a woman is unhappy with her body, she is more likely to be unhappy with other areas of her life as well. This procedure can help a woman to be satisfied with the way her body looks, and this will, in turn, help her to be more satisfied with herself overall. An improved self-image can go a long way in improving one's prospects in one's professional and personal life, and this is an important and worthwhile benefit of the surgery.
A breast augmentation, then, can help a woman in a variety of ways. It will make her breasts larger, but it will also give them an improved and more attractive shape. Most importantly, though, the procedure often helps women to have a more positive view of their bodies as well as of themselves more generally.

Alternative Options to Breast Augmentation

Are you dissatisfied with the size of your breasts? If so, then you might be considering undergoing a breast augmentation. Before you do this, there are various things that you should know about your alternative options. While these are not as permanent, and often not as natural looking, as having the procedure, they nonetheless might be a viable choice.
Bras
If you are unsure about having a breast augmentation, then there are a variety of bras on the market that will serve to help increase the apparent size of your breasts. A push up bra will help to make your breasts appear larger by lifting them up so that all of the tissue is concentrated in one area. There are also a number of padded bras that are thicker than normal bras. These will help to give the appearance of larger breasts as well. However, each of these options can only serve to increase the apparent size by a rather small degree.
Non-Surgical Options
If you are hesitant about having a breast augmentation, then there are also a number of non-surgical, implant-like products that you can buy as well. These are often simply rubber or latex items that are shaped like breasts and can be inserted into a bra. These will add size and some degree of shape to the breasts. However, these can sometimes be uncomfortable to wear and are not as permanent as the surgical option.
Implants
If neither of these options sounds like they would be of help to you, then your best choice would be to consult a surgeon about having a breast augmentation. This procedure increases the size and improves the shape of the breasts by surgically implanting a small bag filled with a silicone or saline solution. These help to give the breasts a larger, natural-looking appearance that is permanent in a way that the above options are not. Another advantage of the procedure is that it increases the size of the breasts at all times. Non-surgical options can do nothing to improve the size or shape of the breasts when a woman is nude, but implants can.
In all, there are a variety of alternatives to a breast augmentation procedure. While they will allow you to avoid undergoing surgery, they are neither as effective nor as permanent as having the procedure done. So, if you are looking for a small increase in size, then the alternatives might be a good choice, but in most cases the best option is to choose the surgery.

Suggestions on Preventing ACL Injuries

Many of us who live an active lifestyle understand how important it is to take care of our bodies to enjoy that lifestyle for the longest amount of time possible. If you don't take care of your body properly, however, a little bit of activity could sideline you for quite some time due to injury. There are some things that you can do in order to prevent injuries as well as to ensure that if you are injured, you are on the sidelines for the least amount of time possible. Here are some suggestions that you can incorporate into your own lifestyle that may be of help to you.
One of the most important things for you to consider when it comes to sports or activity related injuries is that prevention is the majority of the battle. It is important for you to be strengthening the body on a regular basis so that you can avoid those injuries when possible. Of course, doing the right type of strength training exercises is going to make a large difference in how successful you are with the overall process. In addition, you would want to ensure that you are doing the exercises properly because it is possible that injuries could occur while you are doing them.
That is why many people look to a personal trainer in order to assist them to improve in their activity as well as for the prevention of injuries. For example, if you play certain aggressive sports, your trainer may feel that there are certain injury prevention exercises that must be done. This will help with the prevention of ACL injuries as well as other injuries that can occur in the area. It can be difficult to strengthen the knee on your own, as it is easy to over work the area and strain it in an attempt to strengthen it. Having a personal trainer will assist you in overcoming this difficulty.
Another important thing for you to consider with the prevention of injuries is to stretch properly. When you stretch regularly, it gives your body more flexibility and it is less likely that you will have problems as a result of activity related injuries. It is important, however, for you to ensure that you are stretching properly without overdoing it. If you overstretch an area, you can easily become injured and cause more problems from the start. Additionally, it is a good idea to incorporate the assistance of a trainer when doing certain types of stretches so that your form is flawless.
As you can see, there are some things that can be done to prevent injuries. If you're already dealing with an injury, some of these suggestions may also assist you in getting back into the game as quickly as possible. There may be other times when rest and perhaps some pain medication may be needed, depending upon the severity and type of injury. Make sure that you get your doctors input when you have an injury so that you can be on the sidelines for the least amount of time possible.

Plastic Surgery Options For Men

Plastic surgery is not something that is only for women. You might already know this, but you still may think it is more common for women. Women do tend to have more procedures done than men, but there are also many men that choose to have one or more procedures performed by a trained surgeon. If you are a man and are interested in getting any type of work done, it is always important to choose a doctor that has experience in performing services specifically for men. Men are usually more discreet about getting these things done, but there are plenty of men that do it.
One of the most common plastic surgery procedures for men is a tummy tuck. A tummy tuck is sometimes one of the only ways men can lose weight in their abdomens and tone up their tummies. A tummy tuck is designed to remove the excess skin that is in this area. This will help a man lose the additional weight that he needs to and it will also make it easier for him to tone up the muscles in his stomach. If you have extra skin and fat in this area, a tummy tuck might be right for you. If you have lost a lot of weight already, this may still be right for you, but you may also be interested in liposuction. This is a procedure that is done routinely by experienced surgeons and is used to remove fat deposits. If small pockets of fat get lodged in the stomach area, they can be almost impossible to get rid of. You can exercise and perform workouts that are designed for this area of the body, but you may never be able to get rid of this fat. Liposuction is a simple way of removing these fat deposits, and this surgery can help you tone up your abdomen and the rest of your body.
Men are also prone to getting things done to their face. A plastic surgeon can perform things such as facelifts or eyelid lifts. An eyelid lift is ideal to help a man look younger. Men often begin showing signs of aging around their eyes. This makes a man have a tired look on his face, and it can even cause problems for his vision. An eyelid lift is used to remove the excess skin in this area. It is great for regaining a more youthful appearance, and it can remove years from the way you look. Men may also choose a facelift. This is used to remove all of the sagging skin on the entire face. It will restore a younger look and can make a man look years younger than his real age. Botox is one last procedure common for men. It is non-invasive and can be done rather quickly. Men may choose this procedure simply because no one will ever find out that it was done. Talk to a doctor about the plastic surgery options that are right for you.

10 Smart Things to Do to Keep Your Brain Healthy

Just like it is important for us to take care of our bodies, it is important to take care of our brains as well. You fuel your body with healthy foods and exercise. You can mold and define your muscles, and loose or gain weight to change your appearance. So what can you do to take care of your brain? Well, here are ten things to do to get you started. Follow these ten steps to take care of your brain and you may find that you are a better student, you may even learn something!
1. Work it out
Your brain needs exercise just as much as your body does. It is actually possible for your brain to atrophy just like your muscles. You can exercise your brain by making it think. Make your brain think by doing a crossword puzzle or play a word game with a friend. Read an interesting book, (reading is a big one), watch a though provoking movie and get creative with a hobby. All of these things can stimulate and work your brain causing it to function better. If you are having a hard time with homework or an assignment try taking a break and doing one of these things.
2. Get Moving!
Our bodies thrive on physical exercise, even our brains. When you exercise your heart works harder to pump the blood through your body increasing oxygenation in your brain which is, in a way, exercising your brain. It is a good idea to go on a walk in between classes or take a break from homework to exercise to get your mind working.
3. Challenge Yourself!
Learning new things creates new avenues in your brain and challenges it. When you learn new information your brain becomes healthier. Try learning something new, go to a cooking class or learn yoga. Play chess with a friend or travel, after all "travel broadens the mind". It is important to be learning new things constantly for the health of our brains.
4. Eat Brain Foods
Yes, they exist. Brain foods are foods that provide vital nutrients to your brain. First of all always start your day off with a balanced breakfast. Eating breakfast wakes you up and gives you the nutrients you need to start thinking and functioning. Studies show that people that eat breakfast consume fewer calories throughout the day and have a higher functioning metabolism as well. Foods full of antioxidants like blueberries, and pomegranate are good for your brain along with fish, avocado, fruits and vegetables, and whole grains.
5. Vitamins
Your mom always told you to take your vitamins, and she was right. Your brain thrives on the nutrients in vitamins and supplements so make sure that you are putting them into your body. Omega-3, vitamin B, E and C, grape seed extract and plenty of water are only a few of the things that you should be mindfully adding to your diet to keep a healthy brain.
6. Avoid, Avoid, Avoid
There is opposition in all things. Just like there are good things for your brain, there are also bad things for your brain. For instance drugs and alcohol can actually kill brain cells. You should also avoid or use in moderation substances like caffeine, hydrogenated vegetable oils, heavily processed foods and fast foods. And last but certainly not least, do not smoke. Cigarette smoking robs your brain of oxygen and can cause many problems. In fact, there are studies out there that link some Alzheimer's patients to smoking.
7. Protect your Noggin
Protecting your brain from injury is definitely one way to keep it healthy and smart. Accidents involving your brain can be devastating to the way that your brain functions. Always wear a helmet and wear a seat belt. Be careful when playing contact sports like football and rugby. Repetitive injuries to the brain can cause serious damage that cannot be repaired.
8. Chill Out
Stress can be really hard on your brain. It is in your best interest to reduce stress as much as possible for your mind and your body. Reducing stress can also improve your mental health and state of well being. If you're feeling like you're close to the edge, try to bring the stress levels down a notch. Watch a funny movie, go for a walk or take a bath. Be positive and have fun try not to let stress bring you down and your brain will be a lot better off.
9. Stimulate your Senses
Aromatherapy, massage, working in a garden and baking are all things that can stimulate your senses and influence your brain. When your brain is subjected to multi-sensory activities stimulates your brain and helps keep your mind sharp. For instance when you bake cookies, you combine the ingredients, knead the dough and smell the cookies.
10. Be a Social Butterfly
Your brain is stimulated when you talk to friends and family. When you share experiences and emotions your brain gets stimulants that it needs. Having and making friends is also good for your mental health. Feelings of isolation and loneliness disappear when you surround yourself with loved ones.

Symptoms of Tonsil Stones: Understanding Tonsilloliths

Have you seen white "stones" at the back of your mouth? Do you suffer from awful bad breath? Is it sometimes painful to swallow? These signs may be pointing to tonsil stones.
Tonsil stones (the medical word for them is tonsilloliths) are small chunks of minerals, like calcium, phosphorous and magnesium, plus bacteria that hang on to the creases in your tonsils. They're made of minerals, so they're hard, like stones, and they are white in color.
The size can vary from 300 micrograms (most common) to 40 grams (really bad case), but they're commonly about the size of a pea. This condition can be very annoying and embarrassing, but they are not life threatening, so relax.
The 4 Primary Symptoms
Please note that even if you cannot see anything in the mirror, you still may have tonsilloliths; they may be obscured from view and still cause plenty of irritation. So, here are some of the main symptoms of tonsil stones:
One of the worst and perhaps most distressing symptoms is extreme bad breath (halitosis). The tonsilloliths provide a perfect habitat for bacteria and it's their waste products that cause the distinctive sulfuric smell.
The fact that there are bacteria in your mouth doesn't mean that you have an infection. There are bacteria in everyone's mouths. The problem is that in the case of tonsil stones you end up with an overgrowth of bacteria and then the smell becomes very noticeable. (It's also a vicious cycle: the bacteria are partly responsible for the formation of tonsilloliths in the first place and then the tonsil stones provide a perfect home for vast colonies to thrive.)
A second symptom that you're probably familiar with is pain or swelling or inflammation. Is it sometimes hard to swallow? If you have discomfort and swelling in of your tonsils and throat that may indicate the presence of these stones. On the other hand, it may be something else, like a normal sore throat, obviously. But hard foreign objects in the creases of your tonsils could obviously irritate the surrounding tissue.
If you see white formations at the back of your mouth that look like little chunks of white stones, that's a pretty big clue. In a healthy throat there ought not to be any such formations. If you have visible "stones" hanging out in your tonsil area, don't be too alarmed. But you might want to go see an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist, to be on the safe side. ENT doctors are the experts when it comes to tonsil stones.
The fourth symptom seems a bit random: ear pain.
Why would ear pain have anything to do with stones in your throat? Because the pathway of the nerves happens to go directly from one region to the other. So you could have sudden unexplained ear pain because of the irritation in your throat. This is what is called "referred pain" meaning pain that you experience in one place (your ears) that is due to a cause in another part of your body (the throat).
Tonsil Stone Removal
ENT doctors are trained to remove tonsil stones by performing minor surgery. They'll use a local anesthetic so you won't feel the procedure, and you'll be able to go home afterwards (on an out-patient basis). Again it's a not a big deal for the experts and you'll be well before long.
But please note that tonsilloliths is a recurring condition.
Mary Childs knows the discomfort and embarrassment associated with having tonsil stones. Her site, Stop Tonsil Stones.com is devoted to understanding this common condition and to getting rid of tonsil stones naturally and for good.

4 Types of Situations Where Immediate First Aid Is Required

There are various accidents and emergency situations that require the administration of first aid. This immediate aid can keep your health stable until medical help arrives. A lay person who has no knowledge of first aid will often not know what to do in such a situation. Only a trained individual will be confident enough to perform the necessary treatment procedures and then wait till an ambulance gets there.
To make this world safer, it would help if most people in general would know when first aid should be given and what procedures must be followed. Here are four main situations that require immediate first aid, for starters.
• Choking: There are times you may choke on food and it blocks your airway. This will obstruct your breathing. If you are far from a hospital you will need immediate help to calm you and then remove the foreign body from your airway.
• Fractured and broken bones: Road traffic accidents can lead to broken hands and legs. Before you can be moved to a hospital, you need emergency treatment at the scene. Depending on your health condition, you will require certain procedures to control the bleeding and stabilize your bones. Slings and splints are made out of readily available material and used to support the broken bones.
• Cuts and wounds: Cut and wounds can result in minimal to heavy bleeding that must be immediately controlled. Superficial wounds will need to be cleaned and then bandaged to prevent infection. Once the bleeding is under control, stitched may be required for deep wounds.
• Burns: Burns can be of varying degrees and the treatment is dependent on the degree of the burn. Dressing the burn wound will reduce your pain until further treatment can be provided by professional medical persons. For severe burns if you are unsure, it is better to do nothing except wait for the paramedics to arrive.
These are a few main situations that need immediate first aid administration. It could be a long time before you can be taken to your health care center. In such cases, first aid keeps you alive till you can receive professional medical attention. Proper treatment can also prevent further complications.
If you require a trained person to treat you when you are in an accident, you also must learn first aid to help others in similar situations. The fundamental principles of first aid are simple and can be learnt by attending a short training course. If you are unable to join a regular course, you can do so online studying as well. Advanced and special courses like pediatric and sports first aid courses are also offered. You can choose the course based on your own preference.
The training will give you the confidence to be able to help someone in need. Once you are equipped with the skills, you can use them to benefit yourself and others. Even using a cloth and applying pressure on a bleeding wound serves to reduce bleeding considerably and stabilize the vital organs. This can save a person's life.
